Bird - Butterfly Survey at Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve

Bandhavgarh is a popular tiger reserve, located at the Vindhya hill ranges. It covers the forest areas of Umaria and Katni districts.In terms of floral and faunal diversity, this forest is of vital importance. Bandhavgarh tiger reserve covers total area of 1536 sq.km. in which 716.9 sq. km. area falls under core zone. Here we can find varying geographical conditions in which mainly we will notice hilly terrains, marshes, meadow areas, rivulets, perennials, seasonal nullahs. Here we can find variety of vegetation which includes, grasslands, bushes. This forest is main of mixed, moist and dry deciduous type in which Sal and Bamboo have dominance. For management purpose, this forest is divided into 9 ranges. As per past records, Bandhavgarh tiger reserve (BTR) have 260 bird species, 34 mammal species and 70 butterfly species. As we all know that this combination of birds, mammals, insects, vertebrates changes with passage of time thus such surveys are necessary to keep updated record of these species so that future conservation works could be planned and programmed accordingly.

It is to announce the 2nd bird & butterfly survey at Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. Survey is planned with the objective to explore the bird & butterfly diversity in various habitats of the tiger reserve. This survey will enhance the understanding of the various ecosystem requirements and will also help in better management of ecosystem, according to the need of different fauna.

To participate in this magnificent event, please send the attached application form, duty filled, before 26/Dec/2021. Only shortlisted candidates will be communicated further. Applicants will be communicated only via email, so it is requested to fill the email cautiously. The participation fee will be 1000.00 INR. and will comprise welfare of Forest guards/ chowkidars, medical kit and refreshments. Participation will be confirmed only after fees deposition. Participants have to make their own arrangements to reach Bandhavgarh tiger reserve.

Important Dates

03/Feb/2022: Assembling, registration and briefing at eco-center, Tala village, Bandhavgarh. Then departure to respective camps. 04-05/Feb/2022: Survey on allotted routes. 06/Feb/2022: Back to Tala village, data submission and attend concluding session, followed by departure.

If you are above 18 years, able to walk for long distance, able to identify various butterflies & birds and have your own binoculars, own sleeping bags, then you can apply to participate for this survey. These criteria's will play an important role in your selection probability. In addition to this, make sure you have got both the vaccination dose, wear mask and physically fit (no symptom of fever, cold, cough, breathlessness). This survey will be for hard-workers thus don’t expect any luxury facilities. You will get only basic facilities for stay and food.

How to reach

Reaching Bandhavgarh tiger reserve is easy. Here nearby airport option is Jabalpur airport (180km) which is having flight connectivity with major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indore etc. If you are coming by Train option, then consider Umaria station (37km), Katni railway station (100km), Beohari railway station (90km) and Jabalpur railway station (180km).
